Educational Activity of a Nurse in an Outpatient Department
HANOUSKOVÁ, Radka
This thesis focuses on educational activity of a nurse in an outpatient department. The introduction to the theoretical part identified educational activities, their types, phases, methods and forms. The aim of the thesis and the research question: The aim of the thesis was to find differences between educational activity of a nurse working in outpatient departments existing in hospitals and those out of hospitals. Methodology: The results of this thesis were obtained by a qualitative research method, namely semi structured interviews. One anonymous South Bohemian hospital was involved in the research, from which three nurses working at specialized outpatient departments were chosen. One anonymous South Bohemian outpatient clinic was another research subject. Three nurses working at specialized outpatient departments were chosen there as well. Results: Four categories, each consisting of several subcategories were based on the obtained data. In the first category called educational activity in an outpatient department we found that the educational activity for nurses in outpatient departments is based on education of a patient in health maintenance and restoration and education in prevention and treatment. In the first established subcategory called the applied educational methods we found that the nurses in the hospital as well as those in the outpatient clinic mostly apply dialogue and demonstration to education. In the second subcategory called the number of educated patients the empiric research showed that in average the number of educated patients is twice as high in the hospital as in the outpatient clinic. We were surprised that nurses in the hospital used an education record sheet to record their educational activity, while the nurses from the outpatient clinic did not keep any records. The second category identifies in what nurses can see the importance of patient education. Upon analyses of the result we can say that they can see it in the information source. This category consists of three subcategories. A subcategory dealing with attracting patient's attention to education showed that nurses gain patients with a smile, a kind word, motivation and commendation. The second subcategory was feedback, which showed that nurses get it orally. And the education topic the nurses meet is always specific for each particular type of department. The finding that various topics are educated in all the departments, but one topic is common, namely diet, where all the nurses educate patients in nourishment, was the result. The third category, education method choice was also established. There was a positive finding that nurses use various education methods, which they choose with regard to patient's state and needs. This category consists of two subcategories. The first subcategory was called the most effective educational method. All the nurses uniformly considered interview to be the most effective method. In subcategory educational material we found that nurses use leaflets or aids for injection application as educational material. The last chapter called influence on education was aimed at things that influence nurses' educational activity. A subcategory time for education was established here. One thing the nurses working in the hospital agreed on was that they did not have enough time for education. On the other hand the finding that the nurses from the outpatient clinic mentioned that they had enough time for education was a surprising result. Another subcategory searched for the proper environment. The answers here differed according to the place the nurses worked at. The nurses working in the hospital replied that they did not have suitable environment for education, while those from the outpatient clinic considered their environment acceptable. The last subcategory examined the obstacles to educational activities. The research showed that the nurses see obstacles in age and in lack of confidence in new technologies. T
The level of education of the patient with burn trauma
VLKOJANOVÁ, Lucie
Burn trauma is as old as the mankind itself. Forwarding information, whether oral or in any other form is important nowadays. Most of the patients want to be informed about their health condition, treatment procedures applied by physicians and nurses, methods, options and regimes that have to be adhered to in home treatment. The Bachelor Thesis focuses on education of patients with burn trauma. Patients? view on the issues in question, but also that of the nurses taking care about burnt patients is important. The aim of the work was to find whether patients with burn trauma have sufficient information on the follow-up care and whether nurses educate patients with burn trauma about the follow-up care, what methods nurses apply on education of patients with burn trauma. We asked the following research questions before the research started: ?Do patients with burn trauma have enough information on follow-up care??, then: ?Do nurses educate patients with burn trauma?? and: ?What form of receiving information about burn trauma and the follow-up care do patients prefer?? The above questions were answered by a quantitative research by the method of semi standardized depth interviews with patients of the Burn Medicine Clinic of the University Hospital Královské Vinohrady in Prague and with the caring staff, general nurses from a standard department thereof. The interview with patients consisted of 20 depth questions and that for nurses of 17 depth questions. The interviews were anonymous. All the obtained information was processed into case studies and then into category charts. The research confirmed all the 3 aims of the Thesis. Patients with burn trauma do not have sufficient information on follow-up care even though nurses do educate them about such care. We also tried to find what kind of methods nurses used for patient education. The solutions proposed are: to improve awareness of prevention and first aid, to provide more information on treatment regime during hospitalization and subsequent home care in the form of leaflets or brochures. Apart from being costly the care about patients with burn trauma is also mentally and physically demanding. On the other hand patients hospitalized at the BMC for a long time deserve to be informed on their trauma. The nurses mentioned a lack of time for education. It is however clear that if patients had information in written oral education would not be so time consuming then. None of the patients required permanent presence of a nurse, but they did require information on the treatment methods they were undergoing, about which they did not have any information.
The Influenece of the Permanent Carciac Stimulator on the Life of the Client
BALVÍNOVÁ, Hana
This work deals with the impact of permanent pacemakers on patients´ lives. Over 6,000 permanent pacemakers are implanted every year in the Czech Republic. Cardiac pacing is a method of medical treatment through slow hearth rhythms. Although pacemakers improve the health of their holders, the situation the patients have to face is quite demanding and affects every aspect of their life. The aim of this work was to examine and identify the care for the clients before and after pacemaker implantations, who instructed them and who helped them most to deal with the given situation. We inquired whether the patients had enough information about the life with a pacemaker and what kind of changes occurred in their lives after the implantation. We chose a qualitative research to achieve the above mentioned goals. We interviewed 7 clients who had lived with a pacemaker for more than one year. The interviews were held during the patients´ visits to the cardiac pacing clinic within their regular checkups. The research revealed that the care for these patients was very good. All the patients were satisfied. They had enough information both from the doctors and the nurses. Many clients found information in information leaflets and media, in particular on the Internet. Most of the clients found the necessity of an implantation quite stressful at the beginning and had to cope with it. Despite their initial worries and frequent monitoring of their heart rhythms, they managed to adapt to it and no longer think about it. Their life has grown better in most of the cases. The research proves that pacemaker significantly affects the health of the clients but does not significantly change their personal lives.

The examination through questionnaires was undertaken by 177 informants of which 96 were patients/clients and 81 nurses. The data were processed by way of the descriptive statistics using diagrams. The research was conducted in five hospitals. Three hypotheses were raised. Nurses working in isolation wards perform the educational activity. Clients of isolation wards are informed about the care for their health. A general nurse of an isolation ward possesses skills to perform the educational role. All the three hypotheses have been confirmed on the basis of the implementation and the analysis of the research. It follows from the data analysis that the educational activity pursued by nurses is important. A positive finding is that the nurses working in isolation wards implement the educational process, feel the need of further training in the area of education and communication, and are interested in application of their competences also in particular areas of the work with HIV-positive clients and with the clients suffering from chronic infectious hepatitis. It is obvious from the research that the objectives that had been set have been attained. It is necessary to address the topic henceforth since some problems have appeared in the educational process, hindering nurses from performing the educational activity. These are insufficient spatial, time and material conditions that can be solved through the proposed organizational and personnel measures.
